    The Detroit Red Wings will face off against the Montreal Canadiens in their 2025-26 season opener on October 9th.

    The top original six teams have played each other over 600 times, including 11 Stanley Cup Finals with the Habs coming away with six wins to the Red Wings' five. The rivalry has seen some legendary moments like clashes between Maurice “Rocket” Richard and Gordie Howe in the 1950s and ’60s all the way up until the the Habs dominant 4-1 win over the Wings this past April.

    Detroit has lost three of their last four matchups versus Montreal and will look to break the losing skid when opening up their 100th anniversary season against them in a game that promises to have celebration festivities beforehand. The city, steeped in hockey lore, is poised to celebrate 100 years of hockey excellence with a night that will likely see the celebration of icons like Howe, Yzerman and many others. 

    Detroit is eager to honor their past legends in a packed arena, while Montreal aims to assert dominance early in the Eastern Conference after making a surprise appearance in the playoffs last season.
