On the opening day of the NHL free-agency period, the Detroit Red Wings are adding some veteran talent up front with the signing of Viktor Arvidsson.

The opening day of the NHL Free Agency period is here, and the Detroit Red Wings have made a signing to add veteran talent up front.

The Red Wings are signing veteran forward Viktor Arvidsson, who played last season with the divisional rival Boston Bruins, to a two-year contract with a $5 million cap hit.

Arvidsson, who was selected in the fourth round (112th overall) of the 2014 NHL Draft by the Nashville Predators, scored 25 goals and 29 assists in 69 games with the Bruins in 2025-26 and should help Detroit's five-on-five scoring, which has been lacking.

The move also re-unites him with coach Todd McLellan, whom he played under while with the Los Angeles Kings.

During his time with the Predators, Arvidsson enjoyed seasons of both 31 and 34 goals scored, and also helped the franchise reach the 2017 Stanley Cup Final.

He would eventually join the Kings ahead of the 2021-22 season and scored 20 and 26 goals in his first two full seasons with the club before being limited to just 18 games in 2023-24, during which he scored six goals.

He would sign with the Edmonton Oilers in 2024-25, scoring 15 goals in 67 games and helping the club reach the 2024 Stanley Cup Final before departing in free agency to sign with the Bruins.

Arvidsson has skated in 682 career NHL games, and has tallied 219 goals with 224 assists. He's also added 17 goals and 29 assists in 91 career Stanley Cup Playoff games.
