Last night at Blue FCU Arena in Loveland, 2023 Detroit Red Wings first round pick Nate Danielson scored the shootout winner, lifting the visiting Grand Rapids Griffins over the Colorado Eagles by a 3-2 final score and snapping a two-game Griffins losing streak.
To notch the winner, Danielson took a circuitous route, showing no urgency as he picked up the puck, cutting wide left as he hit the blue line, then knifing back to the middle of the ice to fire a shot that beat Eagles goaltender Trent Miner low to his glove To gside.
To make it to the shootout, Grand Rapids needed goals from Austin Watson and Cross Hanas, the latter's a power play strike to tie the score at two just under eight minutes into the third period. Elmer Soderblom picked up the secondary assist on Hanas' goal, his seventh helper of the season and 100th career point as a professional.
Sebastian Cossa made 22 saves on 24 shots, plus two more in the shootout, just as his week began with his first NHL win coming Monday night and capped with a pair of shootout denials.
At 16-8-1 for the season, the Griffins lead the AHL's Central Division, six points (albeit with four extra games played) over the Milwaukee Admirals. GR also boasts the second best record in the Western Conference, trailing only the Calgary Wranglers. The Griffins will be back in action Tuesday night on the road—taking on the Texas Stars on back-to-back nights at the HEB Center in Cedar Park.
