The Red Wings re-call defenseman Justin Holl from the AHL. Here's what it means for the short-term roster and lineup
This morning, less than 24 hours after sending him down, the Red Wings re-called defenseman Justin Holl from Grand Rapids. In writing about the assignment down to the Griffins yesterday, I pointed out that it corresponded to two possibilities: a paper transaction for some cap accrual or a full-on re-assignment should Jeff Petry prove healthy enough to play tomorrow night. Based on today's decision, it would appear the first option is the relevant one.
Holl played in each of the last two Red Wings games before his temporary demotion, and it must be said he played well. He earned his place in the lineup in large part because, in Petry's absence, he became one of just two right-shot defenseman at Detroit's disposal (the other being Moritz Seider). However, a steady defensive presence both nights along with a crisp assist on the Red Wings' lone goal in a 4-1 defeat in New York Tuesday suggested that Holl might just deserve a bit more NHL burn.
The first year of Holl's three year contract did not go swimmingly. Last season, he featured in just 38 NHL games for Detroit, and his 15:05 average time on ice was his lowest since becoming a full-time NHLer. It appeared year two of that contract was on a similar trajectory after being assigned to the Griffins in the Red Wings' final wave of pre-season roster cuts. However, an early injury to Petry paved the way to Holl re-asserting himself. If he maintains his present form, Holl could very well force Detroit to make the cap room necessary to keep him around at the NHL level moving forward.
