Red Wings 2023 Draft selection Trey Augustine is looking forward to the challenge of his first professional season with the American Hockey League affiliate Grand Rapids Griffins.
The first season of professional hockey is on deck for Detroit Red Wings prospect goaltender Trey Augustine, who suddenly has a bigger spotlight upon him following the trade of Sebastian Cossa to the Utah Mammoth.
A South Lyon native, Augustine spent time with the U.S. National Team Development Program in Plymouth before continuing his career at Michigan State. And now, he'll be competing for the starting position with the American Hockey League's Grand Rapids Griffins.
Augustine, who finished Saturday evening's Prospect Tournament opener with 26 saves in a 4-3 shootout victory, is looking forward to the challenge.
"Really, just it's my first time playing where there are a lot more games and practices, just seeing how I can manage that and keeping improving every day," Augustine said afterward.
Naturally, making the move from the NCAA to the professional ranks will come with a bit of an adjustment, and Augustine, having played two games with Grand Rapids last season
Everything is happening so much faster, everyone is a little better. Passes are a little cleaner, shots are a little harder, more precise. So, you really have to just be on top of your game all the time."
"There's nothing like playing games definitely for younger guys including myself coming in here," Augustine said. "It's really exciting. It's a new chapter of my life now and I'm just really excited to be a professional hockey player. I'm really excited to be part of this organization."
