From The Silky Mitten State: Unpacking the latest rumors around four key Red Wings free agents
Last week, we touched on the latest reporting around three key Red Wing free agents: Lucas Raymond, Patrick Kane, and David Perron. Specifically, I unpacked a report from Pierre LeBrun that Detroit general manager Steve Yzerman would be meeting with the agents of Raymond and Kane (Pat Brisson of CAA) and Perron (Allan Walsh of Octagon Hockey). With the NHL temporarily descending on Buffalo for the league's scouting combine,
On the most recent episode of The Silky Mitten State, my co-host Connor Earegood and I broke down the significance of that report. We assessed the timing of the meeting, the sense that the update LeBrun provided was generally a procedural one that shouldn't come as a major surprise, and how Raymond's case differs from Perron's and Kane's as a restricted free agent.
Our biggest takeaway was that it would stand to reason Yzerman would want to get his two most important pieces of offseason business: re-signing Raymond and fellow RFA Moritz Seider to extensions. In an ideal scenario, those extensions are signed, sealed, and delivered prior to the NHL Draft on the final weekend of June to maximize Detroit's ability to wheel and deal in the trade market.
