Now out after three years coaching CSKA Moscow in the KHL, is it possible Fedorov's coaching future lies in the NHL?
After a three year run coaching CSKA Moscow in Russia's Kontinental Hockey League, Sergei Fedorov's contract will not been renewed. He will reportedly be replaced by Ilya Vorobyov behind the CSKA bench. During his first two years as coach, Fedorov oversaw two Gagarin Cup victories as KHL champions, but after a turbulent season in year three, CSKA was eliminated in the first round of the playoffs, setting the stage for Fedorov's ouster.
During his tenure, Fedorov's signature as a coach became his proclivity for pulling his goaltender to create a four-on-three manpower advantage in overtime.
It's not easy to parse how translatable Fedorov's KHL coaching results might be to a different competition. CSKA—the fabled "Central Red Army" team that put then-Soviet hockey on the map—has a tremendous advantage in resources over much of the league and made four of the five Gagarin Cup Finals prior to Fedorov's arrival (winning one of those).
Despite that uncertainty, many Red Wing fans are eager to see a man who won three Stanley Cups, a Hart Trophy, and two Selkes for Detroit as a player return as bench boss. However, for the time being, there is no indication that the Red Wings are considering a coaching change.
Derek Lalonde has one year remaining on his three-year contract after this one, and we have no reason to believe GM Steve Yzerman is considering cutting that plan short. Perhaps even more saliently, Fedorov's decision to sign an offer sheet with the Carolina Hurricanes after a prolonged holdout to start the '97-98 season, then eventually to leave Detroit for Anaheim via free agency in the 2003 offseason, has reportedly frayed his relationship with the Ilitch family.
If that dispute with ownership can't be resolved, it's hard to imagine Fedorov back behind the Red Wing bench.
