Interim GM Shawn Horcoff faces a high-stakes test drive as Detroit navigates Dylan Larkin’s future and looming free agency decisions during a deliberate, season-long leadership search.
With the recent hiring of Shawn Horcoff as the new interim general manager of the Detroit Red Wings, fans weren't sure how long the search for a new GM would take. TSN's Chris Johnston offered something of an answer on Tuesday's edition of Insider Trading.
Johnston explained that Horcoff could be in the role all season, noting that the Red Wings are "willing to take their time with the search firm," meaning Horcoff may get a full test drive in the GM's chair this upcoming season.
That means Horcoff will still have to deal with Simon Edvinsson as a restricted free agent, along with notable pending unrestricted free agents in Alex DeBrincat, Andrew Copp, Justin Faulk and John Gibson, all of whom are entering the final year of their current deals.

It'll be an impactful season for the future of the franchise, and Horcoff appears set to have the opportunity to make the most of his stint in the GM's chair, even if his authority in an interim capacity remains somewhat limited compared to a fully empowered general manager.
