(Brian Bradshaw Sevald, Imagn Images)On Monday evening, the NHL's Department of Player Safety announced a three-game suspension for Anaheim Ducks forward Trevor Zegras following his check to the head of Detroit Red Wings forward Michael Rasmussen during Sunday's game.
In its video explaining the suspension, the league's DoPS described Zegras' play as a "late, high hit" featuring "significant head contact, while also pointing out that it was injurious to Rasmussen. The video specified that the check game "outside the window where a check may be legally finished." Though it did not earn a penalty on the ice, the play proved costly for Zegras, whose suspension will cost him $89,843.76 in salary.
Meanwhile, the Red Wings have been sent into a minor injury crisis, with both Andrew Copp (who is now on injured reserve) and Rasmussen unavailable coming out of the weekend's back-to-back. After Monday's practice, coach Todd McLellan said that Copp's injury is something longer term, while Rasmussen is day-to-day and revealed that neither player will travel to Minnesota for Tuesday night's game against the Wild.
