Ville Husso hadn't even landed in Sweden before learning he'd be turning right back around to join his wife and newborn back in Detroit
For Detroit Red Wings goaltender Ville Husso, the trip to Stockholm for the NHL's Global Series could hardly have been briefer. With the team still in the air en route to Sweden, Husso received word that his wife Hayley would be giving birth imminently, so he would be turning straight around.

The result was a frenzied few hours in Stockholm, before a late-night flight home to return to his wife and meet his newborn daughter, Emmi. With an ear-to-ear smile across his face Monday afternoon, Husso sat at his stall and recounted the timeline:
"Quick practice, then head to the hotel, had dinner with the guys, then I had a taxi [at] 3:30 AM Monday morning in Sweden. The baby came at like 3:10 AM Swedish time...I was jumping in the taxi the same the baby was coming, so it was a little hectic there, but at the end of the day, the baby is healthy and that's all that matters, and Mom is doing good too."
As he got ready to hop into the taxi, Husso received a FaceTime call from his family, and "the first thing I heard was the baby crying." He said that the ensuing flight home went by quickly with the anticipation of what waited on the other side.
"You can't really do much, so I tried to get some sleep," Husso said of his second trans-Atlantic flight in a 24-hour period. "I knew that the hospital people was taking care of her [sic], and she was in good hands, so there was nothing to be worried [about]. Unfortunately, I missed the birth, but hopefully the next one I get to see."
"It was nice that the team let me come home, and I got to spend a little extra time [with the family] because the team was in Sweden," he added. "It's been great so far."
Husso said that he's "been staring at the little girl for hours, just staring at her and enjoying it," since getting to meet his daughter upon touching back in Detroit.
He also noted that he was able to watch the Red Wings' two Global Series games in Sweden on TV and skate a few times (including yesterday with goaltending coach Alex Westlund), even with the paternal duties and fatigue of being a new father.
After the team's first skate since returning home, Husso said, "I feel pretty good, and I stayed active last week too...and now it's time to play hockey"
