Berggren, Raymond Break Out at Right Time for Red Wings

With their goals in the final minutes last night, Jonatan Berggren and Lucas Raymond delivered the offense Detroit has lacked most of the season at exactly the right time

In last night's win over the New York Islanders, the Detroit Red Wings benefitted from two offensive breakouts at the right time.  The time was the final five minutes of regulation, and the breakouts came from Jonatan Berggren and Lucas Raymond.

For 55 minutes, the Red Wings carried play but couldn't find a way past Isles goaltender Ilya Sorokin.  However, Detroit's fortunes changed when Alexander Romanov's broken stick set Berggren free on a two-on-one, where the young Swede looked off Vladimir Tarasenko then wired a shot over Sorokin's blocker.  Then, in the final minute of regulation, Raymond took a spectacular feed from Dylan Larkin along the wall and fired the winning shot over Sorokin's glove.  "Both those goals, those finishes, a lot of credit, because Sorokin looked like the top goalie in the league.  He just had that look to him," said coach Derek Lalonde after the game.  "I thought it would take an ugly one or a good bounce, but it didn't.  We had two good finishes."

For a Red Wing team struggling to score goals, the two breakouts came at the right time.  It took Berggren 15 games to find his first goal this season, but now he has three in his last five.  Meanwhile, Raymond leads Detroit in scoring, but that came almost entirely from assists, with just two goals entering last night's action.  It's just one night and two goals, but the Red Wings will look to build on the confidence boost of the twin snipes on one of the league's best goaltenders.  For more on the well-timed joint breakout, check out the featured video above.
