Fresh off a dominant WHL campaign, the Michigan-bound phenom carries the weight of the Cossa trade as Detroit evaluates if his explosive scoring warrants an immediate professional leap.
After selling off one of the franchise's most prized prospects in Sebastian Cossa to the Utah Mammoth, Detroit Red Wings fans were hoping whatever came back in return would prove just as impactful. That return arrived in the form of the 23rd overall pick, which Detroit used to select a new Michigan Wolverine in J.P. Hurlbert.
The 18-year-old Allen, Texas, native was a standout with the U.S. National Team Development Program before turning in a stellar rookie season in major junior hockey, posting 97 points, including 42 goals, in 68 games with the Kamloops Blazers of the Western Hockey League.
That production earned him WHL Rookie of the Year honors and a spot on the league's Western Conference First All-Star Team. Now Hurlbert is making the jump to the NCAA, and he'll be doing it close to home for his new NHL organization, just a 45-minute drive down I-96 in Ann Arbor.
With Hurlbert profiling as an explosive offensive threat, fans are already wondering how soon he could factor into the Red Wings' plans at the NHL level. For NCAA prospects, it isn't unusual to make the leap to the professional ranks after just a single college season, as players like Macklin Celebrini and Jack Eichel have shown in recent years.

However, once a player signs his entry-level contract, something Hurlbert hasn't done yet, he forfeits his NCAA eligibility. So if the Red Wings determine by the end of this coming season that he's ready for the professional game, his time at Michigan could amount to a single season.
That decision will ultimately fall on Detroit's front office with the most likely path appearing to be letting Hurlbert play out his freshman season at Michigan to keep developing his game, then revisiting the situation heading into 2027-28, whether that means a chance to make the Red Wings' roster out of training camp or a call-up at some point during that season.
One thing that is certain, is with the added weight of Hurlbert representing the return on the Cossa trade, plenty of eyes will be on the Wolverines this coming NCAA hockey season.
