New York eyes a veteran spark, inviting the gritty faceoff specialist and former Wolverines captain to training camp to bolster their bottom-six depth and struggling penalty kill.
On Monday, the New York Rangers announced that they have signed veteran forward Luke Glendening to a professional tryout agreement.
The 37-year-old never emerged as more than a 20-point player over a 14-year NHL career, but he struck a chord with Detroit fans as a Michigan native. The Grand Rapids, Michigan, product went undrafted after four years at the University of Michigan, where he captained the team in his final season and recorded 21 points in 41 games.
Glendening made the jump to the pro level briefly with the Providence Bruins, playing three games, before moving to his home state with the Detroit Red Wings organization. He began his pro career with his hometown Grand Rapids Griffins, posting 26 points in 51 games in one season there. He made the Red Wings the following season, playing 56 games and recording just seven points.

He went on to spend eight seasons in Detroit, recording 57 goals and 69 assists for 126 points in 554 games, also wearing an "A" as an assistant captain from 2019 to 2021, a testament to his leadership, despite never topping 23 points in an NHL season.
Glendening joined the Dallas Stars in 2021 and played two seasons there before spending two more with the Tampa Bay Lightning. Last season, he split time between the New Jersey Devils and Philadelphia Flyers.
He now joins a Rangers team whose offense ranks in the bottom ten this season at 2.80 goals per game. New York will likely welcome his experience, veteran leadership and penalty-killing ability as it looks for a spark.
