Swedish standout Anton Johansson brings his towering frame and puck-moving flair to Grand Rapids, aiming to transform a stellar SHL campaign into a permanent North American impact.
It was a season to remember for the Detroit Red Wings' minor league system, as their AHL affiliate in the Grand Rapids Griffins put together a historic 51-win campaign that they'll look to build on.
It appears the Griffins will be getting some reinforcements next season, with several players looking poised to make the full-time jump to the pro level. One of the most exciting names in that group is 22-year-old defenseman Anton Johansson.
The towering six-foot-four Swedish blueliner may have become something of a forgotten Red Wings pick as a fourth-round selection back in 2022, but he has emerged as quite the physical, puck-moving defenseman.
This past season in the notoriously defensive SHL, Johansson found the scoresheet more often than most from the back end, recording five goals and 12 assists for 17 points in 42 games for Leksands IF. Toward the end of the season, he made the jump to North American hockey with Grand Rapids and didn't skip a beat, picking up six points in his first eight games with the club.

Elite Prospects has Johansson joining the Griffins full-time next season, which will give the organization a complete look at what he can do on North American ice.
There's a possibility that, if his play stands out enough, he could even push for a roster spot with the Red Wings down the line, or be used as a valuable trade chip given his standing as a right-shot defenseman. The trio of Moritz Seider, Axel Sandin-Pellikka and Justin Faulk appear locked in as Detroit's top three right-shot defensemen heading into next season.
Still, if Johansson can put together a standout year with the Griffins, he could work his way into the conversation for a roster spot by the 2027-28 season, when Faulk's contract is set to expire and a spot on the back end could open up.
Johansson figures to be one of the more interesting names to watch in Hockeytown for years to come, and he'll be followed closely after the way he finished this past season.
