Sophomore Michigan State goaltender Trey Augustine—selected in the second round of the 2023 NHL Draft by the Detroit Red Wings, his hometown team—continued his decorated amateur career Saturday night in East Lansing, when he propelled the Spartans back to the Big Ten championship game with an 18-save shutout to beat Notre Dame 1–0 in the conference semi-finals.

Just 20 years old, Augustine already enjoys an extended history of hardware at the amateur level.  He has won gold at the World U-18 Championship, two gold medals and a bronze at the World Junior, two Big Ten regular season championships with MSU, and after beating Notre Dame Saturday night, he's one win away from a second Big Ten Tournament championship.

Of course, the real prize Augustine and the Spartans are after this year won't be available until the Big Ten Tournament is over.  MSU will host Ohio State next weekend at Munn Ice Arena, but regardless of the outcome of that game, State will head into the NCAA Tournament as a one seed.

Last year as a one seed, MSU lost in the Maryland Heights, MO Regional Final to arch-rival Michigan (whom it had beaten a week earlier in that year's Big Ten title game), falling one win short of the Frozen Four.  This time around, Augustine and company will be looking for a deeper national run.  The Spartans last made the Frozen Four in 2007, when they went on to win a national championship.  Augustine will be looking to backstop his team to replicating that result, which may well prove the perfect conclusion to his amateur career and on-ramp to turning professional with the Red Wings.
