Red Wings' Western Road Swing Starts Cold, a Kekäläinen Era Post-Mortum, and MSU Flips In-State Hockey Hierarchy: The Silky Mitten State Episode 14

The latest episode of THN Detroit's hit podcast, The Silky Mitten State, is live!

On this episode, my co-host Connor Earegood and I break down the Red Wings' 1-2-0 start out of the All-Star break.  We discuss some positives, like Jake Walman's game-winning Griddy and Lucas Raymond's power, while also raising some concerns like Alex Lyon's form, the limited back-up goaltending options at the present, and a woeful night on the power play yesterday in Vancouver.

From there, it's a hard pivot into an extensive discussion of the Jarmo Kekäläinen era in Columbus.  In 11 years running the Blue Jackets, Kekäläinen's teams won just one playoff series (albeit quite a notable one), so was this a case of a small market team doing what it could to stay relevant(-ish) or did Columbus' management suffer from a lack of aspiration?  We discuss this in unexpected detail.

Finally, the show wraps with a conversation about Michigan State's sweep over Michigan last weekend, including winning back the fabled Iron D trophy for their Duel in the D triumph.  We discuss the weekend that was, as well as the path forward for both teams following MSU's emphatic victories.

For an excerpt of today's conversation, check out this clip—exploring the shortcomings of the Detroit power play last night against the Canucks:
