Did the Oilers Not Show Enough Patience?
The Edmonton Oilers hired Mike Babcock as head coach after initially targeting Bruce Cassidy of the Vegas Golden Knights. Edmonton requested permission to interview Cassidy but was denied, prompting the team to pivot rather than wait.
According to broadcaster Rod Pedersen, the Oilers might have landed Cassidy had they waited another week, though this remains speculative.
Vegas was unlikely to allow a division rival to speak with their coach. Ultimately, Edmonton met with Babcock, and team leadership was convinced he was the right choice. Because they never spoke with Cassidy, it remains unclear how serious a candidate he truly was for the role.
Do you think the Oilers should have waited one more week?
