Former Undrafted Oilers Defenseman Retires From Hockey

Former Edmonton Oilers defenseman Brad Hunt has retired from the NHL. 

Hunt's Oilers tenure was where his NHL story began. An undrafted, undersized (5'9") offensive defenseman out of Bemidji State, Hunt earned his first NHL opportunity after a strong AHL debut with the Chicago Wolves, signing a two-year entry-level contract with Edmonton in July 2013. He spent his first pro seasons developing into a standout AHL power-play quarterback while serving as a capable NHL call-up option, staying with the organization through free agency in the summer of 2016.

Edmonton never became his full-time NHL home — that came later. Instead, he played parts of three seasons in Edmonton, showing signs he had a unique ability to produce offense from the blue line in limited minutes. 

He moved on to the St. Louis Blues, and it was his stops in Vegas and Minnesota that showed he had the goods to play as an NHL regular.

His career included 288 NHL games and 86 points.
