From an Edmonton Oilers perspective, Wednesday was an interesting day. Specifically, an update on the coaching landscape provided news that former head coach Jay Woodcroft is quickly emerging as a top candidate in the Toronto Maple Leafs’ coaching search.

The Toronto native, now with the Anaheim Ducks, is set to interview and is considered a strong bet to land a head coaching role for 2026–27.

Woodcroft previously guided the Oilers to the 2022 Western Conference Final and worked closely with stars Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl. As Toronto narrows its list of candidates, Woodcroft’s rise highlights how Edmonton’s former bench boss remains highly regarded around the league.

Is it surprising that Woodcroft is on their radar, but Kris Knoblauch doesn't seem to be?
