Yet, this is the familiar position the Edmonton Oilers find themselves in.

Jeff Skinner scored his first goal in an Oilers uniform tonight. However, goals from Corey Perry and Derek Ryan were called back, costing the team the game. Having one of those called back is a setback. Both? A nightmare.

Eager to right the ship, the Oilers will look ahead to the Philadephia Flyers coming to Edmonton on Tuesday.

    Sights & Sounds

    Stuart Skinner Not Happy

Much will be made of the quality of this game's officiating (or lack thereof). One of the chief criticisms was the missed slashing call on Mikael Backlund on Stuart Skinner.

At the end of the period after the incident, Skinner was spotted losing it to one of the referees. For this calm and collected individual to be this passionate about a missed call should tip the viewer to the legitimacy of his complaint.

Despite this, the questionable officiating endured the entire contest.

While Zach Hyman fielded questions from the media, Calvin Pickard had a heart-to-heart with Skinner. I'm not sure what was said between the two netminders, but Skinner has spoken of Pickard's quality as a teammate, and I'm confident it was on full display in that conversation.

    Corey Perry's "Significant Presence"

The NHL released the reasoning behind calling back Perry's goal due to goalie interference. They said, "Edmonton's Corey Perry had a significant presence in the crease which impaired Dan Vladar's ability to play his position prior to his goal."

Watch the play below and decide for yourself.

My Edmonton colleague Mark Spector said it best, "he's only had a 'significant presence in the crease' for 1300 games." This is the most bizarre reasoning for calling back a goal because of "goalie interference."

    Odds and Ends

-Kyle Davidson was in the press box for tonight's game. This isn't entirely surprising, as the Chicago Blackhawks played the Oilers last night. But it's always interesting to watch when another team's GM is in the building.

-Walking out of the dressing room, a couple of sticks caught my eye. The sticks for Travis Dermott are pre-taped with Pride Tape. It was a pleasant reminder of one of the great humans on this Oilers team.

-Oilers play next on Tuesday night against the 1-1-0 Flyers. The Flyers lost their last game 6-3 to the pesky Flames on Saturday night.
