Connor McDavid Chasing Down Nathan MacKinnon

Connor McDavid and Nathan MacKinnon are in hot pursuit of a Wayne Gretzky feat.

Edmonton Oilers have the second fewest goals scored against them all season.

EDMONTON -- Connor McDavid can't stop scoring points at home. Last night's 6-1 victory showcased the Edmonton Oilers captain adding a goal and an assist to his totals for the season.

He has 23 goals and 74 assists for 97 points on the year. He's on pace for over 100 assists (which would be a career high) and only 31 goals - his lowest total since the 2016-17 season.

No matter how the points are coming, he's still at the top of the rankings among all players. McDavid sits third in the league - behind only Nathan MacKinnon and Nikita Kucherov.

Both of those players have played five more games than the Oilers captain.

McDavid is four points behind MacKinnon and eight points behind Kucherov. But that's not the only thing that McDavid is chasing.

MacKinnon has been on fire this season. His 101 points in 62 games has him on pace to obliterate his career high of 111 points from last season.

He also has the longest active home points streak this season. For 29 straight home games MacKinnon has registered at least a single point.

McDavid is hot on his tail - with his two point effort last night at Rogers Place putting him at 25 consecutive games at home with at least a point.

Both MacKinnon and McDavid are gunning for Wayne Gretzky's record of 40. To break that would require registering a point in every single home game of the season.

McDavid has missed one home game due to injury and didn't record a point against the Dallas Stars on November 2nd. So unfortunately for McDavid, he can only tie the record - which is an incredible achievement regardless.

MacKinnon, on the other hand has a shot at breaking it. He has at least a point in every single home game that the Colorado Avalanche had played in this year.

Who will tie the record? Will MacKinnon break it? This will be an exciting race to watch for the rest of the 2023-24 season.
