Frank Seravalli shared his thoughts recently on who he thinks the Edmonton Oilers need to acquire.

Edmonton Oilers goalie Stuart Skinner cannot be relied on for 70+ starts this year. The last goalie to do that for the Oilers - or any other team - was 2016-17 Cam Talbot.

It's no secret that the Edmonton Oilers have had a rough go with goalies this season, especially pre-Kris Knoblauch. Jack Campbell and Stuart Skinner have had their struggles but Skinner has rebounded while Campbell has continued to spiral in the AHL.

In Skinner's last 10 games he's been solid - 2.11 goals against average (GAA) and a .924 save percentage (SV%) to compliment his eight wins.

His resurgence bodes well for the Oilers, but the question needs to be asked: do the Oilers need another goalie?

Most pundits would suggest that they do - including hockey Insider Frank Seravalli with Daily Faceoff. He was recently on the Oilersnation Everyday podcast with Tyler Yaremchuk to speak about a goalie the Oilers should consider.

Seravalli suggests that Detroit Red Wings goalie James Reimer should be a target for the team. He cites his NHL experience and time spent in another Canadian market as reasons to consider him.

Frankly speaking (pun absolutely intended), this isn't a good idea. Reimer isn't an improvement on what the team already has with Calvin Pickard.

Pickard vs Reimer

Looking at traditional goalie stats, Reimer has a 3.41 GAA along with a .889 SV%. Conversely, Pickard has a 2.82 GAA with a .904 SV%. They have both won three games, but Pickard achieved that playing half the games that Reimer has.

Moving on to MoneyPuck.com, Reimer has -7.6 goals saved above expected. A negative number means that the average goalie should have stopped 7.6 more goals than he has. Pickard is practically on par with a -0.1 goals saved above expected.

Pickard is already in the Oilers organization and the only way they make a trade is for an improvement, not to gain experience for experience's sake.
