EDMONTON – It's decision time for the Edmonton Oilers and Evander Kane.

The NHL Trade Deadline is one week away. Unfortunately, the Oilers may need to alter their plans due to the team's current state.

A five-game losing streak isn’t the end of the world. It is when those five games are right before the Trade Deadline.

The Oilers will have to make decisions, and there is no question about that. However, one of the players they must decide about is Kane.

And he has his own deadline.

As reported by Elliotte Friedman on his latest installment of his written 32 Thoughts, on March 1st, Kane’s no-movement clause changes to a modified no-trade clause. With the new clause, he must have a 16-team approved trade list. So, this is where things get real for Kane and the Oilers.

Kane is exactly the kind of player the Oilers need on their roster in the playoffs. However, this only holds water if he is 100 percent healthy and up to game speed.

Can Kane get up to game speed before the playoffs? That’s tough to quantify.

He is recovering from several different injuries. Kane had surgery for his sports hernia before the season started, then knee surgery in the last couple of months. That’s a lot for a 33-year-old power forward.

Kane has been a consistent 20-goal scorer for his entire career. His energy, snarl, and goal-scoring prowess make him the ideal playoff performer.

But the biggest question with Kane is this: can he be both healthy and effective when he returns to the Oilers? If the answer is no, the Oilers must consider a trade.

And with a fresh list of 16 teams to pick from, surely a deal can be had that benefits everyone.

Buckle up, Oil Country, this could be an entertaining week.
