EDMONTON – Championship teams win because of a team-first mentality. While the Edmonton Oilers have gotten a couple of cracks at the can, they are hopeful for another kick at it this season.

The lead driver of that being Connor McDavid. And, according to John Shannon, the captain of the Oilers could surprise some folks with what his next deal with the team looks like.

While making an appearance on the Oilers Now show on Friday, August 15th, Shannon revealed what he believes McDavid’s next contract will look like.

“I think it’s a three or four-year deal,” Shannon told Bob Stauffer. “I think Connor is entitled to 20 percent, what does that put it at, 17 or 18 (million)?”

“Connor is also smart enough to know that if he gets too much, that’s less to acquire free agents and other players for this hockey club,” Shannon continued. “That’s what superstars do, who want to win the Stanley Cup.”

“I think Connor’s going to come in lower than a lot of people (think).”

If McDavid’s next deal comes in lower than $17 million a season, Oilers fans should jump for joy. He knows that he can and will get paid a lot of money. One reason he might be aiming for a shorter-term deal is to keep the number low now, allowing him to push for 20 percent when the salary cap is considerably higher.

Either way, if Shannon is correct, this should be music to the ears of Oilers fans everywhere.
