In exactly one month, the NHL trade deadline will be here. And for yet another year, the Edmonton Oilers will look to fortify their group for a deep post-season run.

The Oilers are in a good position. With a game in hand, they hold a two-point lead over the second-place Vegas Golden Knights.

Despite this good standing, contending teams must add more players who will help their club.

Earlier on Friday, Oilers Now host Bob Stauffer spoke about what the Oilers will be looking to accomplish by the trade deadline. After an interview with newest Oilers defender, John Klingberg, he said this.

"At some point between now and March 7th, they will add a left-shot D," Stauffer revealed. "(It) doesn't mean it's going to be a guy who's going to supplant one of Ekholm, Nurse, or Kulak."

"But they are going to add a veteran left D. A guy who can maybe be a number seven defenseman, number eight defenseman."

    My Take

This report makes a lot of sense for several reasons. It's clear that the Oilers will add a defenseman to their team, but the qualifications of that defender will depend on other factors.

Primarily, the Oilers' evaluation of Klingberg will greatly impact this decision. If Klingberg plays up to the standard they want from a top-four defender, they only need to add a depth blueliner.

However, if Klingberg isn't up to par, I believe they will be in on bigger-game hunting.

Let's see what the next month brings for the Oilers.
