Drake Caggiula is headed back to Bakersfield after collecting one assist in two games.

What goes up, must come down.
Drake Caggiula's return to the Oilers proved to be brief, as he's been loaned back to Bakersfield after just two games with Edmonton.
That Caggiula was called up at all was a bit of a surprise. He was recalled a week ago with Noah Philp to replace an injured Connor McDavid, despite the Oilers only needing to fill one roster spot. Now, after appearing in two games and being scratched against New Jersey on Monday, Caggiula is headed back to Bakersfield.
Caggiula's first game was promising: he added speed and grit to the fourth line in place of Derek Ryan, and chipped in an assist on Corey Perry's goal against Nashville.
Things took a turn for the worse on Sunday in Calgary, however. Despite coming away with the win, the Oilers were absolutely eviscerated with Caggiula's fourth line on the ice. They were out-chanced 10-2 by the Flames in just five minutes together, and Caggula's xG% was under 15% for the game.
All in all, the Oilers' fourth line provided only 4% of the expected goals while they were on the ice, so low I didn't think possible.
Derek Ryan drew back in on Monday night, to much better results. A day later, Caggiula is headed back to California.
That's not to say he won't be back, however. Caggiula had an excellent pre-season and got off to a hot start in Bakersfield with five points in five games. He's got 284 games worth of NHL experience and brings speed, grit, and intensity whenever he's on the ice.
The Oilers' fourth line has struggled mightily this season, whether it's Derek Ryan, Mattias Janmark, or even Noah Philp next to Corey Perry. It's an area where I'd expect a lot of movement as the season goes on, and it wouldn't be a surprise to see Caggiula draw back in at some point. If he's there for any extended period, however, things have probably gone quite wrong.
