Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports - REPORT: Oilers Could Trade For New Defender Soon

EDMONTON -- There are a lot of irons in the fire.

Or at least, that is what Frank Seravalli of Daily Faceoff is saying about the Edmonton Oilers. According to Seravalli, the Oilers are on the cusp of a deal.

And Oilers fans wouldn't have to wait until the trade deadline for that deal to be executed.

Speaking on Oilers Now, Seravalli hinted at the Oilers looking to do more than just hand out a PTO, "I've gotta tell you there are other things that Edmonton is looking at. I think including, a potential trade that could shake things up a little bit more than just the PTO route."

When asked if there was a deal that "wouldn't have to wait until the deadline" to be executed Seravalli responded, "(it) wouldn't have to wait until training camp."

"I think there's seven different scenarios that Stan Bowman and his staff are probably looking at. And they are looking at lots of different options around the league. It might just be as simple as a one-year league-minimum contract to someone, it might be a PTO. But I think they are willing to consider other options now that they have some flexibility to do something."

    My Take

If the Oilers are looking to add a defenseman via trade, there are a lot of good options. Without speculating on who could be available, there are some intriguing names of players with contracts expiring this year and next year.

Dante Fabbro, Adam Larsson, William Borgen and David Savard are all on deals that expire at the end of the 2024-25 season. All four are right-handed defenders and would either fit on the team's second or third pairing.

It's going to be an interesting time for Oilers fans leading up to training camp. It sounds like Bowman is not resting on his laurels. That's a positive sign for the team and the fans.
