The Edmonton Oilers could look to a former player with the organization to potentially become the next general manager.

Edmonton Oilers will see Mattias Ekholm return to the lineup. Expected to be paired with Evan Bouchard.

There are many things wrong with the Edmonton Oilers - chief among them is goaltending. Another major issue is the limitations put on this roster due to a lack of cap management.

Two things that fall under the general managers jurisdiction.

If the Oilers decide to show Holland the door, who could step up to the plate in his place?

I briefly touched on two potential internal candidates when Steve Staios left to join the Ottawa Senators. There is one external option who could be an interesting successor.

Shawn Horcoff is Ready For GM Role

Shawn Horcoff has been a part of the Detroit Red Wings organization since September of 2016. He started in player development and was promoted to assistant general manager in 2022 - where he is currently the general manager of the AHL affiliate of the Red Wings, the Grand Rapids Griffins.

The Griffins finished last in their division last year and did not qualify for the playoffs. In the off-season they made some changes, and now sit with a 3-3-1-1 record through the first eight games of the season - good for 4th (out of seven) in their division.

It would be a full circle moment to have Holland's successor be someone who just spent four years under Steve Yzerman - the man who replaced Holland for the Red Wings.
