The Edmonton Oilers appear to cover their bases with their most recent transaction.

EDMONTON -- It's better to be safe than sorry.

The Edmonton Oilers are approaching their defense situation cautiously. With Evan Bouchard a game-time decision for today's tilt against the Vegas Golden Knights, they made a recall last night as insurance.

Joshua (Josh) Brown was recalled last night.

Brown has alternated between the NHL and AHL a few times this season. When he was called up earlier in the year, he played three games and averaged 12:13 minutes on ice per game.

He's played 16 games in the AHL, recorded three assists, and hasn't been afraid to drop the gloves. He's participated in four fights while with the Bakersfield Condors. He also had one spirited tilt in his previous recall stint with the Oilers.

Bouchard's injury is not believed to be serious. However, he did not practice with the team yesterday. Ty Emberson took his position on Mattias Ekholm's right side. The pair is familiar with each other, as they have become a go-to pairing on the penalty kill.

Another factor to consider is Alec Regula's health. The recently claimed defender hasn't played a game all season. He missed the start of the Boston Bruins training camp due to a knee injury.

On October 7th, he was placed on the Bruins' injured non-roster list. Regula was expected to return at the end of December. On the 10th, he was activated from the non-roster list and had to be put on waivers.

Being activated doesn't mean he is ready to play NHL games yet. Although he has been with the team for a few days, he has not participated in practice. Once he practices with the team a few times, he will be closer to being game-ready.

For the Oilers' sake, let's hope Brown's recall will keep them safe instead of sorry.
