The Young Stars Classic is officially underway in Penticton, British Columbia. The first game for the Edmonton Oilers rookies was against the Winnipeg Jets rookie squad. The Oilers defeated the Jets by a score of 3-1.
Beau Akey and Jake Sloan were offensive standouts in the game. Akey was the 56th overall pick in the 2023 NHL Entry Draft while Sloan was an invite to camp. Sloan scored twice while Akey added a goal and an assist to his box score.
Akey's goal came on the power play where he sniped a one-timer wrist shot from the right-hand faceoff circle. He was composed with the puck the entire game and his skating was very smooth. Sloan showed off his dexterity by tipping a shot from Akey to score his first of the game. His second goal came by being in the right place, right time - he shoveled a loose puck into the gapping net as the Jets netminder was stretched out.

The Oilers rookies will be in action again on Saturday September 16th, for a game against the Calgary Flames rookies. The game will start at 8:15 Mountain Time and is available to view on the Oilers streaming service, Oilers+.
