The Edmonton Oilers have released their Pre-Season schedule for the upcoming 2023-24 season. They will play eight games in total - the first on September 24th, and the last one on October 6th. They will play one home game and one away game against each of the four teams.

Eight games is plenty of time for the players to get into game shape. Head coaches usually take one of two approaches: 1) try as many different line combinations as possible to get a variety of different looks or 2) after a two or three games, start to focus on chemistry between linemates. The only way this long of a pre-season makes sense is to develop chemistry and allow teammates to get to know each other on the ice if they've never played together.

Last season the Oilers also had eight pre-season games, and Connor McDavid only dressed for four of them. Why is it necessary to play so many games? Do you want your star players to be only dressing for half of these games? Six games would be a better use of all four of these teams resources.
