The Edmonton Oilers have had the same goalie coach for the past nine seasons, is it time for a change?

It's no secret that the Edmonton Oilers haven't had the best goaltending in the NHL for a very long time. With 12 goals against in two games, there is obvious concern among fans regarding the goalies.

Is the problem the goalies or something else? Could it be the goaltending coach?

Let's take a look at all the goalies who have been with the Oilers since Dustin Schwartz was named the goaltending coach. He joined the organization in November 2014 - so we'll look at the 2014-15 season up to last season. To narrow the sample size, we'll just look at goalies who played 20 or more games in a season.

From 2014-15 till 2022-23 the Oilers had eight goalies who played more than 20 games in a season: Ben Scrivens, Viktor Fasth, Anders Nilsson, Cam Talbot, Mikko Koskinen, Mike Smith, Stuart Skinner and Jack Campbell.

The goalies who have had a season with a save percentage (SV%) better than .910 are: Talbot, Smith, Koskinen, and Skinner.  In each of the seasons that those goalies had a SV% greater than .910, it was better than the league average for that season.

The past four straight seasons they have had one goalie above league average, and in two of those four seasons they have had another goalie just under the league average.

Yes, the goaltending hasn't been the best in the NHL. But the Oilers have had at least one goalie be better than league average in six of the nine seasons that Schwartz has been the goalie coach. He isn't the problem.
