The Edmonton Oilers are having to adjust their plans on what to do with their goaltenders.

Edmonton Oilers goalie Stuart Skinner cannot be relied on for 70+ starts this year. The last goalie to do that for the Oilers - or any other team - was 2016-17 Cam Talbot.

The Edmonton Oilers keep on rolling. Now five games deep into a winning streak, they consistently look like a playoff team. Minimal turnovers, good goaltending and production up and down the lineup.

Stuart Skinner has been solid in net over that span with a 1.58 goals against average (GAA) to compliment a .943 save percentage (SV%). He's been steady in net while the team in front of him has been giving up less.

They can't solely rely on Skinner. At some point he will need to rest a game (or two). Do they trust Calvin Pickard enough for him to be the sole backup for the team? Most likely not.

It sounds like the Oilers had a plan for their goaltending - but then Jack Campbell's recent play in the AHL has forced the team to change course.

According to hockey insider Elliotte Friedman, the Oilers are pivoting from their original goalie plans. In his latest written edition of 32 thoughts he said, "The plan was to bring back Campbell after three strong starts but the fourth one...didn't go so well, halting the idea."

It's unfortunate for both the team and the player that they are at this crossroads with Campbell. There was hope that he could help solidify their goaltending for years to come.

That hope is in jeopardy now.

It sounds like the plan is still to call him up, just not quite yet. Time will tell if that was the right move or not.
