EDMONTON – You can’t win every trophy.

Individual awards are impressive in their own right. Edmonton Oilers forward Leon Draisaitl has won his fair share.

Back in 2019-20, he took the NHL by storm, posting 43 goals and 110 points en route to winning the Hart Trophy, the Ted Lindsay Award, and the Art Ross Trophy.

Fast-forward to the 2024-25 season, and Draisaitl already has the Maurice Richard Trophy in his back pocket. He finished the regular season with 52 goals, which was seven more than the next highest player, William Nylander of the Toronto Maple Leafs (who also played 11 more games).

Sadly for Draisaitl, he will not be taking home the Selke Trophy.

The NHL announced the winner of the Selke Trophy for the 2024-25 season. Unsurprisingly to most, Aleksander Barkov took home his second consecutive Selke Trophy.

How Close Was Leon Draisaitl To Winning The Selke?

Members of the PHWA voted on the Selke Trophy. They use a points system to determine the winner of the trophy.

Members of the PHWA are asked to select a 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th-place player. Each rank is assigned a numerical value, and the total values are added up to determine the winner. Here are the values:

    1st - 10 points

    2nd - 7 points

    3rd - 5 points

    4th - 3 points

    5th - 1 point

The votes for Barkov (96-31-28-14-4) tallied 1363 votes – over 500 more points than the next highest finalist.

In contrast, Draisaitl finished sixth in Selke voting, with 235 points. He finished with one first-place vote, 18 second-place votes, and 11 third, fourth, and fifth-place votes. No other Oilers player finished with any votes.

If this past year is any indication, Draisaitl takes his defensive game very seriously and will be pushing himself further in this regard next year. It would not surprise this writer to see him as a finalist next season.

Draisaitl can’t win every trophy, but he will certainly try.
