There is no bigger lightning rod on the Canucks defense than veteran Tyler Myers, who's literally a rod at 6-foot-8.

Though he's a good skater for his size and handles the puck like a skilled defenseman, Myers is also prone to poor reads, low-IQ plays and never uses his reach or size to his advantage.

For years, however, the Canucks have viewed Myers as a top-four defenseman, capable of playing in all situations. Never mind that Myers has never scored more than 37 points since his Calder-winning rookie season, or that he once dumped the puck during 3-on-3 overtime at even-strength, or took out his own teammate on an offensive rush and allow a game-ending breakaway the other way.

In his seventh season with the Canucks, the local hero -- Myers, though born in Texas, played junior hockey in Kelowna and makes his off-season home in B.C. as well -- was scratched Wednesday against the Jets for 'roster management' reasons, which usually means there's an impending trade.

With a no-trade clause that gives Myers control of his future, that the Canucks potentially have a deal in place suggests that they're serious about jettisoning all of their veterans and starting fresh.

The Canucks have been loathe to do so, choosing instead to part ways with previous front-office executives who suggested the Canucks clear the decks in the post-Sedin era.

Are the Canucks for real this time, or is this another head fake where they deal a veteran for futures, only to deal the acquired futures for another win-now veteran player instead?
