Originally published Sept. 1, 2009, fantasy expert Murray Townsend breaks down how he makes his annual player projections.

Projecting player production is an inexact science, but the more homework you do, the more accurate your projections should be.

For resident THN fantasy expert, Murray Townsend pores over his extensive player notes, using "upwards of a dozen categories to project how many points a player will score, including age, team, linemates and personal history."

Depth charts are an important factor, as well. As Townsend notes:

"... a first-liner on a weak team will still most likely outscore a second-line player on a strong team, due to more ice time and scoring opportunities. A first-line player will also be getting more time on special teams."
