Managing a fantasy hockey team can be time consuming, but how about running multiple leagues for everyone else?
Back in 1992, fantasy hockey enthusiasts Douglas Turnbull, then a restaurant manager in the Cayman Islands, and business partner John Mooney offered an alternative to the traditional rotisserie leagues by offering a head-to-head format.
Instead of accumulating stats over the course of the season in 'roto' leagues, head-to-head leagues pit fantasy managers against each other on a weekly basis. Turnbull and Mooney keep tabs on more than 2,500 teams registered with their company, Fantasy Sports Services, using four computers in Turnbull's basement.
Head-to-head leagues are designed to provide more interaction and player movement.
“'We encourage players to make trades and pick up players every week,' Turnbull said. 'It’s part of what makes the whole experience fun.'"
