Marchand was injured during Game 3 in Boston and did not play in Game 4 on Sunday
The Boston Bruins will not have their captain in uniform when they hit the ice for Game 5 against the Florida Panthers.
Boston will be looking to avoid elimination, trailing Florida 3-1 in the best-of-7 second round series, and they will have to do it without Brad Marchand.
After the Bruins morning skate in Sunrise, one in which Marchand was a participant, Head Coach Jim Montgomery was quickly asked about the status of his captain for Game 5.
“Not an option tonight,” Montgomery said.
Marchand was injured during Game 3, taking hits from Sam Bennett during the first period and Kevin Stenlund during the second period before ultimately leaving the game for good.
Marchand has since been labeled day-to-day with an upper-body injury.
Bennett's hit was highly scrutinized for an apparent sucker puck to Marchand's head, one that Bennett insists was not intentional.
Florida, which has not responded to the Bruins’ best efforts to drop the gloves and engage in physical retribution, went on to win Game 3 and Game 4 in Boston, setting the stage to potentially send the B's home for good in Game 5.
Boston, obviously, has other plans. We’ll see how well they can execute those plans without their captain for a second straight game.
In addition to keeping their season alive, the Bruins would also like to give Marchand the chance for his season to end on the ice instead of wearing a suit in the press box.
“I think our focus is on our structure, our execution and getting ready to win Game 5,” said Montgomery. “Giving (Marchand) an opportunity (to play again) is extra motivation.”
