After a grueling recovery from knee surgery, the Panthers captain returns to lead a lethal new top line alongside Sam Reinhart and blockbuster acquisition Brady Tkachuk.
The last time Florida Panthers captain Sasha Barkov was on the ice for a National Hockey League game, he was skating around Amerant Bank Arena with the Stanley Cup.
That was on June 17, 2025.
Now, exactly 469 days later, Barkov is ready to resume his potential Hall of Fame career with a reconstructed right knee and a new fire in his belly after sitting out a full NHL season that came directly on the heels of consecutive championships.
“I’m obviously very excited to play meaningful games,” Barkov said Monday. “I’ve been waiting for this for a long time.”
Barkov missed all of last season after tearing his ACL and MCL during what was his first on-ice workout of training camp last September.
He returned in time to represent Finland at the IIHF World Championships in late May, leading his country to a gold medal while pacing his teammates with 11 points in 10 games.
Not bad considering it was his first action in nearly a year and fresh off major knee surgery.
After spending the summer continuing to put the work in and preparing to hit the ground running with the Panthers, Barkov survived training camp and Florida’s abbreviated preseason slate and is now chomping at the bit to start playing meaningful games again.
“I’m very excited, of course,” Barkov said. “I was happy to be able to play two games before that, to kind of get into the rhythm.”
Through camp and the exhibition games, Barkov has been skating on what could end up being a very formidable forward line, flanked by a familiar face in Sam Reinhart and a new linemate in Brady Tkachuk.
The younger Tkachuk brother was acquired in late June and only adds to what could very well be considered the deepest forward group in the league.
Through five periods spent together during the preseason, the new Barkov line combined to rack up five goals and seven assists on 20 shots and a plus-13 on-ice rating.
When asked about Tkahcuk, Barkov said there is a lot to like about what he brings to the table.
“Just everything he does,” said Barkov. “He knows his role right away. He knows he needs to be fast, he knows he needs to stay on the pucks, like control the puck and that kind of stuff, and he was unbelievable for those two games.”
They also skated together on the Cats’ top power play unit, along with Matthew Tkachuk and Seth Jones.
It should be fun to watch the group continue to acclimate to one another and grow together as the season progresses.
