The Florida Panthers have added some depth to the team’s goaltending department.
Swiss goalie Ludovic Waeber has signed a one-year, entry-level contract with the Panthers, the team announced on Monday.
He’s expected to join Florida’ AHL affiliate, the Charlotte Checkers, for the start of the 2023-24 hockey season.
The undrafted 26-year-old was with the ZSC Lions of the Swiss National League this past season, where he finished with a 2.50 goals against average, .914 save percentage and a pair of shutouts.
He’s a veteran of the National League, appearing in 115 regular season games and another 19 playoff games between the Lions and HC Fribourg-Gottéron.
Waeber has earned a reputation as an extremely hard-working goaltender who also has great character.
He should be entering the prime years of his career, one that has seen him steadily improve over the past several seasons.
As is generally the case, there will likely be a bit of an adjustment period as he transitions from playing in a European pro league to the North American style of hockey.
Ultimately, this is a low risk signing for the Panthers that could end up paying off nicely down the stretch.
As we’ve seen this season with Alex Lyon, goaltending depth is essential to the success of a franchise.
