After a making two straight Stanley Cup Final's and achieving championship success, Paul Maurice will continue to be the Panthers bench boss for many years to come
The Florida Panthers have accomplished quite a lot over the last two seasons: one an Atlantic Division title, winning the Prince of Wales Trophy twice, and more importantly, winning the 2024 Stanley Cup
With that comes some rewards, like locking up their core players in Sam Reinhart, Anton Lundell and Carter Verhaeghe.
Tuesday, they made another addition to the list when the Panthers announced a multi-year extension with Head Coach Paul Maurice.
The Panthers were coming off of getting swept in the second round by their state-rival in the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2022. It was a season filled with promise after winning 58 games and winning their first playoff series since 1996.
It was not good enough for Florida General Manager Bill Zito, hence the move to hire Maurice.
Maurice was a few months removed from resigning from his position with the Winnipeg Jets, which came in the middle of that season, reason being that the group "needed a new voice."
Zito felt the same way about his team needing a new voice, which he felt that Maurice and the Panthers were a match made in heaven.
It was the start of a shift for the Cats, who would also trade for star Matthew Tkachuk just weeks later.
Along with coaching the Jets, Maurice's head coaching experience included Hartford/Carolina, and Toronto.
One of the biggest knocks on Maurice at the time of the hire was that although he had longevity coaching in the NHL, that he never got it done by winning a championship, and the most regular season losses by a head coach.
A championship sure changes the perception of the hockey lifer, who was entering his final year of his current contract with the team.
The Panthers will get some continuity on the roster, in the front office, and behind the bench as this group is not going to be split up any time soon.
Maurice currently sits fourth on the NHL’s all-time wins list with 873, and second in games coached at 1,856.
With already being the most accomplished coach in franchise history and the Stanley Cup win, this extension will definitely help him add to his already padded resume.
