The Florida Panthers fell to the Carolina Hurricanes 4-1 in the opening game for each at the 2023 Southeast Hockey Showcase.
It was a tough night for the Panthers, who were outshot 31-22 and had a hard time staying out of the penalty box, granting Carolina seven power plays.
From the early stages, the Hurricanes controlled the pace of the game.
Florida's prospects had a difficult time dealing with a tenacious forecheck from Carolina, with white jersey's surrounding the puck all game long.
After the final buzzer, a few of the Panthers prospects spoke about their tough night and how to bounce back from it.
Justin Sourdif:
“For us, I feel like if we're a little bit more disciplined, that'll help us out. You can't take penalties, if you're trying to play the game shorthand, it's kind of tough, you lose your energy that way. System-wise, they play really tight. Every time you have the puck it seems like there are two or three guys on you, so you’ve got to make decisions pretty fast out there.I thought they did a pretty good job of kind of out in the neutral zone, but we'll try and regroup and figure that out tomorrow.”
Kai Schwindt:
“They're a good team, they play pretty tight, but we're all here to learn, so we're just gonna learn from that and bring it to tomorrow and see how the next team plays, so we'll just kind of forget about it and go on to the next game.”
Mack Guzda:
“Whatever situation may come, I just think as a goalie you just want to be ready for that. Just like during the regular season or playoffs or in any scenario, it's all about just getting ready for whatever (may come), you don't know what you're gonna get at any given time, so just staying sharp and just, when other teams get their chances, just being as focused as you can in those moments.”
