On Thursday morning, the NHL Department of Player Safety announced that Los Angeles Kings Forward Phillip Danault had been fined $5,000, the maximum allowed by the CBA, for a slash on Colorado Avalanche forward Ross Colton.
Here's a video of the slash.
This is the second time Danault has been hit with a $5,000 fine since joining the Kings, after his slew foot on Tampa Bay Lightning forward Brayden Point earned him the same punishment last season.
It's a fair punishment for a retaliatory two-handed chop from Danault. A suspension for a player with little history of disciplinary action would have been harsh, but he deserves some sort of discipline for the play.
Avalanche fans will feel a bit aggrieved that Pierre-Luc Dubois hasn't received any call from the league about his hit on Fredrik Olofsson. Dubois clipped Oloffson with what appeared to be a knee-on-knee hit.
On the replay it looks more shin-on-shin but was still a dangerous play and could have received supplemental discipline from the league.
Kings general manager Rob Blake will certainly be letting out a sigh of relief that neither Dubois nor Danault will miss time for their respective plays.
As the Kings can't afford to have more players out with suspensions given their current cap situation.
