
The mark of a good gag? When you get a call from a woman who asks if we could confirm to her husband that our Sean Avery THN cover came with devil horns and a goatee and that she did not scribble on his beloved hockey magazine with a marker.
That actually happened after this issue, featuring the infamous agitator, went to subscribers. Not coincidentally, a big part of the story was Avery’s latest shenanigans – waving his arms frantically in front of Martin Brodeur during a Devils-Rangers playoff game and leading to the fastest rule change in NHL history, a.k.a. ‘The Avery Rule.’ But writer Mike Brophy also pointed out how crucial Avery had been to New York’s success.
