St. Gallen, Switzerland native, Kevin Fiala has been nominated by the LA Kings for the King Clancy Memorial Trophy. The winner will be chosen by a committee comprised of NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman, and former winners of the King Clancy Trophy and the NHL Foundation Award.
The prestigious trophy was first awarded in 1988 to future Hall of Famer, Lanny McDonald, and is handed out annually to the NHL player who "best exemplifies leadership qualities on and off the ice and who has made a significant contribution in his community". The distinction was named after Francis M. "King" Clancy, a player, coach, referee, and executive whose career in the NHL spanned 65 years.
In addition to his offensive prowess on the ice, Fiala has made a huge contribution to Southern California via his "Fiala's Friends" project that hosts patients and families from Children's Hospital LA at LA Kings' games, as well as other charitable endeavors such as the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
Should Fiala win the award this June, he would join Dave Taylor as the only the second LA King to receive the honor. Taylor, a star player for the Kings and later general manager of the team, helped launched the "Tip A King" charity event that raises money for many worthwhile causes since its inception in 1989.
