Game One is in the books and it was an ugly one for the Los Angeles Kings who were helpless as the Edmonton Oilers ran away with a 7-4 victory.
From the opening puck drop, the Oilers were a step ahead and they converted that into a 2-0 lead before the 10 minute mark of period one.
Connor McDavid went to work early, setting up Zach Hyman after a beautiful spin move to beat Mikey Anderson.
Adam Henrique scored just a few minutes later and the route was on.
Midway through the second, the Oilers were up 4-0 after goals from Hyman and Ryan-Nugent Hopkins.
Anderson got the Kings on the board, which was followed by a controversial no-goal call that would have made the game 4-2.
Adrian Kempe did cut the lead in half a few minutes later, but in the third period the Oilers re-established their dominance with two power-play goals.
One from Leon Draisaitl and then a hat trick goal from Hyman put the Oilers up four.
Pierre-Luc Dubois scored a consolation goal off, which went off Darnel Nurse.
Dubois grabbed his first playoff goal for the Kings, in what was a solid game from the $8.5 million center.
Trevor Moore then brought the Kings within two after Cody Ceci's stick broke on an outlet pass, giving the Kings a great chance.
An empty-netter from Warren Foegele put the game to bed at 7-4 though.
The story of the night was the stars on Edmonton though. McDavid dominated this game with five primary assists.
Outside of the points, McDavid controlled play all night. Every time he was on the ice it felt like the ice was tilted in Edmonton's favor.
Phil Danault's line was originally tasked with defending McDavid, however, that was a recipe for disaster, with that line being outscored 3-1 against McDavid's line.
The Oiler's power play also feasted, despite the Kings' improved penalty kill this season.
In all three zones, the Oilers were better. They outworked the Kings for most of the night and have more skill in their lineup.
The Kings have to find another level of intensity in Game Two, or it will be another loss.
They have to outwork the Oilers if they have any hope of winning this series. The Kings can't win based on their skill, Edmonton will win that shootout nine times out of 10.
