He isn't prophetic, but Elliotte Friedman is one of the most well-connected insiders around and rarely says something unless he's confident it's true.
On Friday, he had this to say when asked how aggressive Rob Blake would be in hunting for a goalie before the trade deadline.
"I think they will add a goalie, I do," said Friedman. "Whether it's (Jake) Allen, or somebody else, I think they will add a goalie."
Again, we take this with a grain of salt, but if this is true and Blake is hunting for another goalie, I have one big question. Why?
Goaltending is the least of the Kings' problems and there isn't a game-changing goalie on the market right now.
I could maybe buy it if the Kings were looking to take a big swing at someone like Juuse Saros, who might not be available, it doesn't make sense.
Is Jake Allen going to make a huge difference for the Kings? Probably not.
He isn't an upgrade on Cam Talbot who, despite struggling recently, is an NHL All-Star this season for a reason.
I also question if he's much of an upgrade on David Rittich as a backup. Allen's playing right around a .900 save percentage with a negative goals above expected.
Of course, playing for a weak Montreal Canadiens team will negatively impact his numbers, but he hasn't shown anything to suggest his numbers would take a big leap in Los Angeles.
The Kings also don't have the cap to bring Allen in without sending out a roster player or paying an inflated price for Montreal to retain a chunk of his salary.
It simply wouldn't make sense for the Kings to target Allen.
Beyond Allen, targeting a goalie in general at the deadline doesn't make much sense for the Kings.
They're still one of the best defensive teams in the league and it's their goal-scoring that has let them down recently.
Of course, it's difficult to fix that problem as well given their cap situation. The return of Viktor Arvidsson is their real hope for deadline reinforcements.
Friedman is as reliable as they come though, so I wouldn't be shocked to see the Kings trade for a goalie between now and the deadline. Even if it would be a mistake.
