The Los Angeles Kings didn't have much to play for in game 82. Yes, seeding was still up for grabs and every game matters, but locked into a playoff spot against a bottom feeder took some of the importance out of this one.
However, Quinton Byfield had a lot to play for.
He needed just one goal to become the third Kings player in the last 20 years to reach 20 or more goals at 21 or younger.
Byfield was also due a $215,000 bonus if he broke the 20 goal mark.
The team was clearly aware of the bonus, and might have been aware of the milestone, feeding Byfield pucks all night.
Finally, on the power play in the second period, Byfield broke his 19 game scoring drought and hit 20.
It isn't too often you see the four other skaters on the ice get more excited than the goal scorer, that's usually reserved for first career goals or record breakers, but the King's players were fired up for that 20th.
Perhaps less important, Byfield also hit the aforementioned milestone.
It's been a breakout season for Byfield, whose 20 goals and 54 points are career-highs in both categories for the former second-overall pick.
The playoffs will be a massive test for Byfield though, who has to prove he can be a difference maker after game 82.
However, for now, Byfield should celebrate his breakout season and big bonus.
