Will this move make a difference?
The Kings announced a move to the coaching staff as Mike Buckley will now take over as the goaltending coach. Buckley joins the team after spending the last eight seasons in Pittsburgh with the Penguins. He was originally brought on as the goaltending development coach in 2013 in was promoted to the head goaltending coach in 2017. He spent four seasons as the head man leading the goalies.
He helped the Penguins goalies out a ton with development during their two runs to the Stanley Cup in 2016 and 2017. Buckley also brings experience of coaching at the college level as he spent three seasons coaching the goaltenders for the University of New Hampshire.
Buckley comes in with the task of improving the Los Angeles goaltending situation that was inconsistent at best last season. While the Kings aren't exactly sure who will be in net when the season kicks off later this year, Buckley should be able to help elevate them based off his prior experience.
Los Angeles has a nice core of players on the roster and honestly, their biggest question mark is the goaltending. It cost them a bunch of games this season so the hope is that this change will help them become more stable at the position.
The Kings enter into a critical offseason but this move signals that the team wants to win and win now.
