In July of 2025, the Los Angeles found their new backup goaltender in Anton Forsberg. During the frenzy that is free agency, the Kings signed Forsberg to a two-year deal worth $2.25 million each season.

Los Angeles will be the 32-year-old's fifth stop during his time in the National Hockey League. Forsberg was drafted with the 188th overall pick in the seventh round of the 2011 draft by the Columbus Blue Jackets. He went on to play a combined 10 games through his first three seasons with Columbus before moving onto Chicago where he would finally get a nice workload. As a Blackhawk, Forsberg played in 35 games, posting a solid .908 SV% and a 2.97 GAA. However, his production in Chicago did not land him a full time backup role until his second season in Ottawa in 2021-22. Since then, the veteran netminder has been a very reliable second option in the crease.

2024-25 Season

The Ottawa Senators brought in former Vezina winner Linus Ullmark last offseason, but they retained Anton Forsberg to remain as their backup goalie. Forsberg appeared in 30 games, posting a .901 SV% and a 2.72 GAA, which is a new career best in GAA, beating his previous best of 2.82. With those solid numbers, the Swede had a record of 11-12-3 with three shutouts. According to MoneyPuck, Forsberg was expected to allow 78.23 goals over the course of the season using data and analytics. However, he only allowed 76 pucks by him, leading to a respectful GSAx.

The veteran netminder has never appeared in a Stanley Cup Playoff game. Although the Senators reached the postseason for the first time since 2017, Forsberg was manning the door due to Linus Ullmark being healthy enough to play for their first round defeat to the Toronto Maple Leafs.

2025-26 Expectations and Stat Predictions

Obviously, PuckPedia has Forsberg listed as the backup to 2024-25 Vezina Trophy finalist Darcy Kuemper. Although Kuemper is coming off of an incredible season, Forsberg should still expect to play a good chunk of games, Last season, Kuemper played in 50 of the 82 games, leaving 32 games for his backup(s). Expect the same type of workload for LA's starter in 2025-26.

If Forsberg gets to play in 30-35 games, I expect him to produce some similar numbers to what he did last season, with a chance of improvement due to the Kings back-end being deeper than the Senators. I will say the 190 game veteran will have a record of 14-10-4 with a 2.67 GAA and a .904 SV% as well as three shutouts once again. If LA gets this type of player out of their second string goaltender, they will be very satisfied with their offseason decision.
